NKTR-181, a Mu-opioid analgesic with a new molecular structure, shows slower entry into the brain and reduced CNS side effects

The data presented are binding and receptor function studies show that NKTR-181 binds selectively to the mu opioid receptor and acts as a full agonist. In preclinical models of pain, NKTR-181 showed the complete elimination of pain symptoms comparable to oxycodone. NKTR-181 also showed slower kinetics of entry to the brain in vivo, compared to oxycodone, with a 90 percent reduction in the rate of entry into the brain of oxycodone. The slowing of the brain-uptake correlated with a significantly reduced risk of abuse and side effects on the CNS. » Read the rest of this entry «
